Some inspiration

13 March 05

With so much going on the past two weeks, I haven't been able to find the time to continue developing with Lenya and writing more articles. Most of my time is spent working on day-to-day activities for the College, and the time away from this site is beginning to take a toll on my energy to be vigilant about it.

Whilst perusing a book I recently obtained, I found a quote in it that suddenly kept my spirits high, so I hope by sharing it here that it will inspire someone to keep doing the best you can:

"Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they've got a second. Give your dreams all you've got and you'll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you."

-- William James

What inspires you?

Hi Rahul,

I’m glad you like the articles and find them helpful. With regards to your question on roles, policies, etc., there’s a lot to discuss. Of course, users can be created and assigned to any group, either the ones that come with the default publication, or making up your own.

Then, either the group or the user can be assigned permissions for editing, publishing, etc. down to the page level. You can also add new usecases, etc., that only work if you are within a certain group that has those permissions, so the level of permissions is pretty fine-grained.

Users can be added locally, or they can be added locally but authenticated through an LDAP. I would suspect in a college that it might be the better choice.

Hope this helps!

Hi John,
Thanks very much for giving response as early as possible. We are really enjoying your articles. But John Please Give me some detail information about rights.
How to give access to pagewise or if we want to delete some page there is not having such facility.
I am really confused about rights.Sorry but I am asking this question frankly to you.

Hi Rahul,

No problem – sorry I didn’t explain further. With regards to adding permissions to pages, it’s really simple. Here’s a quick example:

In the default publication, there are 3 groups created for you that have different permissions. You can view them when you log into Lenya and go to the Admin tab at the top left of your screen, then click on Users. They are:

* edit – allowed to edit and add new pages
* review – everything the edit group can do but can also publish or reject pages to the live site
* admin – everything the review group can do but take care of permissions as well

First thing you need to do is login as an individual within the admin group. In the default publication, this is the user “alice”. Once logged in, you can go to the Site tab.

Say you want to give no one privileges to anything, but then slowly add new users to sections of the site. You can click on the word “Authoring” at the left side of the screen, then go to the AC Auth tab at the right. Remove the permissions for edit and review from the groups edit and review.

Then, if you want to assign edit and review permissions to a section of the site, just click on that section, go to the AC Auth tab at the right, and pick their names from the drop down list, giving them the appropriate permissions.

If you want even finer-grained control over usecases, etc., you might want to take a look at this article on the Lenya Wiki. There’s also another document on the Wiki that talks about integrating logins with an LDAP service.

If you still need some help, let me know. Perhaps if this is a question that everyone has, I can write up an article on it.
